Bike sales continued to slide for the fourth month in a row, pulled down by lower numbers of Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS, even as sales of cars remained in the positive territory, primarily buoyed by new model launches and discounts.
Bike market leader Hero Honda said two-wheeler sales dipped by 8.4% as it sold 2,55,200 units in June 2007 against 2,78,660 units in the same month last year.
On the other hand, Bajaj Auto saw yet another month of decline in numbers as its bike sales dropped by 12% at 1,62,253 units against 1,83,549 units in the same month last year.
The company’s bike sales in the first quarter of this fiscal are down 13% at 4,93,565 units against 5,68,187 units in April-June 2006.
Bajaj Auto’s managing directot Rajiv Bajaj blamed “diminishing interest” in existing 100-cc bikes for the decline. The fall was even steeper for TVS Motors, the third-biggest bike maker whose numbers dipped 39% to 47,380 units in June 2007 from 78,271 units in the same month a year-ago.
